When opposing counsel implies your witness is lying, their response depends less on the facts they know and more on what they’re unconsciously protecting—achievement-driven witnesses over-explain to prove competence, approval-seekers become conciliatory to restore likeability, and status-protectors turn combative to avoid humiliation. The witness who understands their own psychological patterns can recognize and manage these automatic reactions; the witness who doesn’t will be managed by opposing counsel instead.
